Perhaps no other NBA trade has had more immediate impact than when Shaquille O’Neal left Orlando Magic for LA Lakers as a free agent in 1996 after failing to agree on contract terms with Orlando Magic management. O’Neal teamed up with Kobe Bryant creating one of NBA’s most formidable duos winning three consecutive titles from 2000-2002.
More recently, Lebron James’ decision to leave Cleveland Cavaliers for Miami Heat changed not only these two teams but also affected balance within entire NBA league. In Miami he formed ‘The Big Three’ with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, leading to two championships. His return to Cleveland in 2014 and subsequent championship win in 2016 is another testament of how one player’s move can dramatically change a team’s fortunes.
These dramatic trades have been pivotal moments in NBA history, creating new dynasties and altering the course of many franchises.
